Neutral Shoes
A neutral shoe is a running shoe with no support or control added into the shoe. The heel of the shoe hits neutral to the ground. Running companies make these shoes because patients are in custom made orthotics. A custom orthotic is made to help control how the foot functions. Maximizing gait and performance. Custom Orthotics will allow you to run faster, further, and longer without getting as tired. It is recommended that runners be casted for orthotics in a medical office where proper biomechanics and gait can be evaluated by Dr. Jeremy Thomas.

Helpful fact during the Holiday
Believe it or not I have a number of patients come into the office during the holiday's with foreign bodies in the bottom of their feet. This foreign body is an ornament from the Christmas tree. Every year since I started Triangle Foot and Ankle Specialist this has occurred. One recommendation is to check the floor around the tree daily for fallen ornaments. My highest recommendation is to wear a soled shoe in the home. Lastly, do not attempt to pull or pick out anything that you may have stepped on. Please let Dr. Thomas or a podiatrist treat this. Often when you pull or pick at the item it breaks inside and can lead to further issues.

Rain Running
I sometimes get questions about running in the rain. With it currently raining as I write this why not a better time to discuss. I think there are many things to consider: 1. Tread on the shoes needs to be visible to the eye. I would use the standard of shoe replacement every 4-6 months depending on the mileage. 2. Proper clothing. Socks should be dry-fit along with your clothing. Allowing clothes to get wet weighs them down and sticks to your body. This can impair running and not allow your body to properly sweat. 3. Running terrain. You should avoid slippery surfaces. 4. Lighted streets. If your running early or late in the day it may still be dark. People driving have difficulty seeing the road in the rain, needless to say runners. Stay in areas where people can see you or wear clothing that reflects. My overall suggestion would be to run inside on that day or use this day as your rest day. Thanks to my patients for bringing up topics such as this one to write on. Hope this helps!
